Teide

There is some controversy concerning the pronunciation of Teide. My 'idiot's guide' ("tay–deh") was based on my understanding of Wikipedia's guide, which uses the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). On pronouncing it this way when I asked the question however, I was corrected by one of the contestants.

Having checked Wikipedia again, I have to say I still think I was more or less right. Wikipedia's Help:IPA/Spanish page says that "e" is pronounced as in the English word "set", and "i" is like the vowel sound in "see". There are no diphthongs. Wikipedia also seems to suggest that the "e" after the "d" is pronounced; so I reckon my idiot's guide interprets Wikipedia's version pretty accurately.

However, You Tube has a pronunciation guide which doesn't pronounce the final "e"; according to this, Teide more or less rhymes with the English word "fade". On my computer it was followed by a tourism video in which the (English) presenter pronounces it "tay-day".

My resident Spanish expert (many of you will know who I mean) agrees pretty much with me, and advises that the most important thing is not to pronounce it "tidy".
